3D printing has been around for a few decades, but a lot of new research and activity has been ongoing in recent years. This increased activity is likely due to the expiration of many of the original 3D printer patents. Today’s 3D printing has gone beyond prototypes and is integrated into manufacturing lines in many markets such as footwear, jewelry, and others. Desktop DIY units are available for as little as $1,000.00.
The main technologies used are thermoplastic resins and a computer-controlled thermal laser which melts the resin or free-radical set polymers which are then cured with an ultraviolet laser. Objects scanned or created in a virtual 3D environment are the roadmap for sometimes intricate, Escher-like objects that could not be made by conventional methods.
The main advantages are personalization and intricacy. Speed of manufacture and strength in the build direction (z) axis are often sacrificed today, but much research is being done to deal with those limitations.
Today much work is being done to improve the mechanical and processing needs of each application. This is where Siltech contributes.

Silsurf D208 |
Water-soluble silicone polyether. Used in personal care applications. It provides conditioning and lubricity. It can also be used in paints and inks for slip and mar resistance. |
Shortest silicone chain possible for a silicone polyether. High purity. This product is an excellent wetter. Used in textiles, agricultural, paints and coatings and any other applications where superior wetting is required. It also acts as a flow and leveling aid in paints and coatings. |
Smallest possible silicone polyether. This is a very effective low foaming wetting agent with excellent spreading capabilities. |
Self-emulsifying in water. The product can be used as an oil-in-water emulsifier. Also useful as a lubricant in textile and personal care applications. |
This silicone polyether copolymer is very soluble in water and most solvents. Gives hair conditioning, foam stabilization and formulation stabilization in PC formula. In inks and coatings moderate slip and mar resistance, good flow, and leveling and a low potential for defects. It can be used in nearly any application where surface tension reduction, surface modification or wetting are desired. |
